Copa d’Europa de pista downhill->

Really nice sunday, gathered in Arco de Triunfo 4 guys and of we went to de velodrome to see de finals of the Copa d'Europa de pista, nice ride to top, nice relaxed rhythm up hill to the velodrome.
Got together with more guys of the Enciklica/Corpusfixie crew, and met with Gabriel from Roda Fixa nice to know you.
He know a thing or two about bicycles, way more than I do.
I'll see you arround.

But then after all the competition, we went downhill to the city center... about 15 guys rushing downhill pretty fast, I can't control my bike that well at high speed cadence, special when it comes to slow down at intersections, I was the last one but I enjoyed the high speed riding!!!

Mechanical weekend

last weekend I had a busy mechanical schedule that included:

buy new double white toe clips for my fixed

spokes, nipples, rim and front hub to build a wheel (something I wanted to learn for some time) also for the fixed with guidance from Alejandro

check, dismount piece by piece, clean and lube everything, change tires and replace break and gear cables, on my girlfriend old German Hercules that she bought second hand.

than I bought new road tires for 26" wheel to make road wheels for my mountain bike for training, but I have to buy inner tubes for that tire size.

Also watched Henrik from Taller Rauric from Taller Rauric install a bottom bracket on Alejandro polo bike he also had to re-do the screw so that he could fit a modern bottom bracket British standard, all about bottom brackets here.

How to make a city bicycle friendly?

This is a question I’ve been asking myself for quite a few years. I live in Lisbon and (much) less than 1% of people use bicyles to go to work. There are a lot of discussed reasons for this. Traffic, highs and lows of the terrain, missing cycle paths and many more. ButCopenhagen was once averse to bicycles (yes!) and it did it. It transformed itself into a bicycle-friendly city. Read this article to find out how they did it. From reading the article I am aware that some of the key points could (and can) be implemented here, but some can’t. Here’s the list.

Key points that would be easy to implement in Lisbon:
- A safe, continuous bicycle infrastructure linked with public transportation obtained through bicycle planning that has the same status as public transport both in planning and funding.Political decision.

- Bike paths and routes are either clearly marked or separated from vehicular traffic by curbs. Bike lanes have their own traffic signals and bikes are prioritized over cars at places where they meet. Takes time. New and refurbished roads should comply to this rules.

- Extensive marketing and public relations campaigns have been implemented to get people to leave their cars at home.

- Fees and taxes for automobile purchase add huge percentage to the price of a new car. There are few parking spaces, and the ones that exist are very expensive. They already exist.

Key points that would be difficult to implement in Lisbon:
- Sponsored and refundable-deposit-based free bikes within a specified area. Vandalism and robery still have advantage hover respect for other people. Hard-to-steal/damage bikes should be used.

- People live far from where they work. If public transportation makes it easier to take bikes at least a part of the problem would be solve.

- Lisbon is not flat. That’s a psychological barrier. How many people do really go up and down a hill everyday in Lisbon?

I would really like that we could use more bicyles in Lisbon. Provided that (political, physical, marketing) things are strategically direccioned that way it wouldn’t be difficult for people to (slowly) start using them. Then I would probably buy two of these or one of these.

In the United States, particularly in the west, cities have grown up around the automobile. Metropolitan areas that had room to spread were a welcome change for those who grew up in older cities that had become dirty and congested.

A car meant freedom. The location of the workplace was no longer tied to the location of the home. With lots of roads and little traffic, great distances could be traveled quickly. Cars were big, gas was cheap and Rachel Carson hadn't written "Silent Spring" yet.

With the oil embargo of 1973-1974, we got a taste of what would happen if the gush of gasoline slowed to a trickle. In the subsequent years, the availability and price of gas has generally been stable, but other problems associated with the automobile have emerged such as air pollution, traffic, parking problems, urban flight and gridlock.

In London today, the average speed of a car is about the same as that of a horse-drawn carriage from a century ago. The frustration born of this level of inefficiency has even lead to the creation of a new term: road rage.

For many who live in cities, the car, once the icon of freedom and prosperity, has become a necessary evil, feeding frustration, spewing out CO2 and other pollutants, and even contributing to obesity, a national epidemic.

Putting bikes, transit first

A safe, continuous bicycle infrastructure linked with public transportation has been created in many European cities. Cities that have made bicycles and public transportation a priority over cars have increased mobility, slow the growth in cars on the road, decreased pollution and generally improved the life and health of the public.

Copenhagen is a beautiful northern European city, with 1.8 million people in the greater metropolitan area. With continuous bike paths, overflowing bike racks and grandmas whizzing by on their 3-speeds, it would be natural for visitors to assume that it has always been a bicycling city.

However, the truth is that bicycling peaked in the 1950s and reached an all time low by the 1970s. It has only been through the concerted and sustained efforts of politicians, planners and traffic engineers that Copenhagen has become a city of bicycles.

Cycling is an integral part of mainstream planning, and bike paths and other bike-friendly facilities are a part of the planning of every new or rebuilt road. Copenhagen's road infrastructure network has not increased since the 1970s and miles driven per year have decreased by 10 percent over the same period of time.

International Sustainable Solutions

Visitors today often assume Copenhagen has always

been a bicycling city, but bicycling peaked in the 1950s

and reached an all-time low in the 1970s.

Politicians, planners and traffic engineers turned

Copenhagen into a city of bicycles.

32% cycle to work

Currently 32 percent of workers bicycle to work. In surveys, 50 percent say they cycle to work because it is fast and easy. An equal number say they do it for exercise. Financial reasons play a part for some cyclists. Weather does have an impact on cycle use but not as much as one might expect. Sixty percent of cyclists normally cycle in rainy weather and 66 percent continue cycling in the winter in temperatures that hover around freezing. Still, these figures aren't good enough for the Department of Traffic Planning, which now has the goal of increasing bicycle commuters to 40 percent. With high levels of cycling, it would be natural to expect a high accident rate, but the paradox is that the more cyclists there are, the safer it is. This is because a critical mass has been achieved in which drivers have a heightened sense of awareness about bicyclists.

How has Copenhagen achieved such a high level of bicycle use? First of all, bicycle planning has the same status as public transport in planning and funding. Bike paths and routes are either clearly marked or separated from vehicular traffic by curbs, bike lanes have their own traffic signals and bikes are prioritized over cars at places where they meet.

Steep taxes, little parking

Extensive marketing and public relations campaigns have been implemented to get people to leave their cars at home for in-city travel, even if they have a car for use on the weekends. In addition to good planning, the local and national governments use a big stick when it comes to trying to keep people from relying on cars. Fees and taxes for automobile purchase add 200 percent to the price of a new car. There are few parking spaces, and the ones that exist are very expensive.

In order to insure that everyone has access to a bike, Copenhagen has a free bike program called City Bikes. Riders pay a refundable deposit of about $3 to have unlimited use of a bike within a specified area. The cost of the program is paid by sponsors, who pay about $280 per year for a minimum of 25 bikes. In return for sponsorship, the bikes carry advertisements, which appear on the top tube panel and disk wheels.

The bicycles used in the City Bikes program were designed with components that are incompatible with other bikes, preventing theft of parts. Since the launch of the program, bicycle theft in Copenhagen has decreased. The City Bikes program has become part of Copenhagen's downtown culture, and a visible sign that Copenhagen cares about being a livable city.

Yeah, but it's flat

Okay, you might say Copenhagen is flat, a perfect city for bicycle commuting. Even though Seattle isn't flat, there are many streets, particularly those going north/south to and from downtown that have gentle inclines for miles. A street-by-street analysis could be done to determine the best streets for bicycle routes. An excellent bike path system could be created using the most appropriate streets. Copenhagen does a street-by-street analysis such as this to figure out how to alleviate bicycle congestion.

In addition, Copenhagen does an extensive bicycle survey every two years to continuously improve its bike system. If Seattle were to do such a survey, it might be discovered that many people would ride their bike, hills and all. After all, how many people rush home from work to get on the Stairmaster or stationery bicycle and use the hill setting? San Francisco, also a hilly city, is consistently ranked by Bicycling magazine as a top city for cycling.

Scandinavian sustainability

In March, a group of architects, engineers, developers and others from Washington and Oregon went to Sweden and Denmark to look at urban sustainability projects.

The DJC is running a series of weekly articles on sustainability in Scandinavia, based on places visited by the tour group.

The tour was organized by International Sustainable Solutions, a group with offices in Seattle and Aalborg, Denmark. The organization encourages the sharing of knowledge and the creation of market opportunities for sustainable products and practices.

Italia es un país en el que Aristóteles nunca estará de moda. Ninguna de sus épocas supo lo que era el término medio. O se era de Moser o de Saroni. De Gilera o de Guzzi. Juve o anti Juve. Gassman o Mastroianni. Loren o Lollobrigida. Café con o senza zucchero. De André o Guccini. Berlusconi o democracia.

Pero hay una trinchera que tala el espíritu italiano en dos mitades por encima de todas las demás. Es una simple imagen. En ella no salen Berlusconis, ni Nancys de la Ruleta de la fortuna, ni enanos con guitarra, ni egregios penes checos y ni siquiera la hizo un paparazzo. Pero ya van 57 años de guerra civil ciclista.

Tour del 52. Dos cuerpos sufrientes y empapados arrastran una mochila de sol en plena subida del Galibier, una pirámide con señales de tráfico. Fausto Coppi, rostro enjuto y ratonil, la ambición en el iris, camiseta blancoceleste de la Bianchi, delante. Los hombros anchos con raya al lado de Gino Bartali, enfundado en el maillot verde de la Legnano, detrás. Ambos agarran el manillar con la mano izquierda. Sus brazos derechos trazan una diagonal, unidos por una botella de agua. Bartali la sostiene por la base. Coppi por el tapón. ¿Quién era el gentiluomo que le pasaba la botella a quién? ¿Quién era el elegante y magnánimo campeón que no dudó en ayudar al otro? Eso se pregunta Italia desde hace 57 años.

Carlo Martini hizo aquella fotografía para la Gazzetta dello Sport. En italia se sigue hablando del bidón de Coppi y Bartali, pero en realidad era una botella de agua. Perrier, probablemente. Lo más curioso es que el fotógrafo se puso de acuerdo con ellos para retratar el momento. Pensó en una imagen poco al uso (ganó el premio a la fotografía deportiva del año). Y le salió un dilema.

En espera, música de baile

Ambos eran una radiografía de las dos Italias. Bartali, católico, rural, bonachón y popular, capaz de hartarse de vino y spaghetti la víspera de una dura ascensión. Coppi, laico, introvertido, puntilloso, siempre a dieta. En esa Italia de Don Camilo y Pepone, alguien puso a Bartali la etiqueta de la Democracia Cristiana, partido hegemónico en el poder y quintaesencia de la Italia media. Por eliminación, a Coppi le cayó el estandarte de la hoz y el martillo del Partido Comunista de Togliatti. No eran ni lo uno ni lo otro, pero en Italia eso da igual.

Bartali ya era un ídolo cuando su equipo eligió a un jovenzuelo llamado Coppi como gregario en el Giro de 1940. Bartali se cayó en las primeras etapas. Perdió demasiado tiempo y Coppi, en una épica Firenze-Modena, bajo un torrencial aguacero, escribió, en letra rosa, claro, la primera frase de uno de los palmarés más exitosos de la historia.

Y en aquel Giro nació todo. Con la maglia rosa, Coppi y Bartali ascendían una montaña ten con ten. El imberbe líder, asaetado por los calambres, hizo ademán de bajarse y retirarse. Bartali, en vez de adelantarle, se bajó, le metió la cara en la nieve, lo vuelve a subir en la bici y le suelta: "Coppi, eres sólo un acquaiolo [intraducible expresión, que vendría a ser algo así como cobarde o gallina]".

La supremacía de Coppi, confirmada en años posteriores, dejó la frase más elocuente de la historia de la radio deportiva. Milano-San Remo. 1946. El de Castellania se escapa y llega con 14 minutos de adelanto sobre el pelotón. El cronista de la RAI, sin recursos, sienta cátedra: "Primer clasificado: ¡Fausto Coppi! En espera del segundo, les ponemos música de baile".

Coppi era igual de bueno en montaña que esprintando. Bartali era como un pedernal maleable. Un menhir grácil. Sin fisuras. Aquél era un ciclismo de fuerza. Ni pinganillos ni hostias. Mente y gemelos, como piñón y plato, tirando del alma, que hasta ella pesa en una rampa del 15%. Cada uno ganó dos tours de Francia. Pero Coppi supera en Giros (5) a Bartali (3). Fue mejor, pero de eso ya nadie habla en Italia. De la imagen del Galibier, sí. No se trata de trofeos, sino de "classe".

Lenin contra el Papa.

Dos bandos irreconciliables se medían en cada carrera. Como si sobre la bici esprintasen De Gasperi y Togliatti. Lenin y el Papa. Dos italias falsas, pero contentas de tener cada una un símbolo al que encomendarse en los mediodías del verano. Pero Italia nunca puede fiarse de sí misma.

Con el mentón de Mussolini ya en el poder, resulta que el 'comunista' Coppi aceptó enrolarse en la División Ravenna para combatir por el fascismo en la campaña africana, donde fue hecho prisionero por los ingleses. El 'catolicón' Bartali, que trabajó reparando ruedas entre el 43 y junio del 44, transportaba en su bicicleta papeles y fotos para que un taller de la resistencia en Asís elaborase documentos falsos para salvar a judíos de las leyes raciales y los campos de concentración. La policía fascista lo persiguió durante cinco meses. Pero, igual que en carrera, nadie cazaba a Bartali.

¿Y quién le pasó a quién la botella? Ambos reclamaron durante años haberle cedido al otro el recipiente. Fijarse detenidamente en la foto ofrece una pista. Bartali tenía su bici llena de bidones. No le cabía ni uno más. Los portabidones de Coppi están vacíos. El masajista de Bartali siempre aseguró que fue su pupilo el 'gentiluomo'. Luigi Malabrocca, amigo de Coppi, aseguró que el campeón llegó a reconocerle que Bartali se la dio. Así probablemente fue. Pero 57 años después, en Italia sigue la polémica.
